Behind Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza's record-breaking season, 2,980 passing yards, 33 touchdown passes, and a nation-leading quarterback rating, the Hoosiers finished 16-0 and rewrote the college football landscape.
In Monday night's championship game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, Mendoza delivered when it mattered most. Named the offensive player of the game, the redshirt junior completed 16 of 27 passes for 186 yards, but it was his tackle-breaking, sprawled-out 12-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-4 with 9:18 left in the game that defined this victory—and the Hoosiers' season. The diving score gave Indiana a 10-point lead and became the signature moment of their championship run.
The Hoosiers sealed the victory when defensive back Jamari Sharpe intercepted Miami quarterback Carson Beck's deep pass with 44 seconds remaining. Indiana also scored on a blocked punt by defensive lineman Mikail Kamara, who was named defensive player of the game after blocking the punt that Isaiah Jones recovered in the end zone for a touchdown late in the third quarter.
