Fernando's Proven Leadership
Fernando Mendoza brings elite experience and production to Indiana as a redshirt junior quarterback from Miami, Florida. After three standout seasons at California, Fernando transferred to Indiana as the No. 14 overall prospect in the Transfer Portal and No. 3 quarterback according to 247Sports.
His 2024 season at Cal was remarkable, producing just the ninth 3,000-yard passing season in California history with 3,004 yards. Fernando earned three ACC Quarterback of the Week honors while finishing in the top-10 of Cal's single-season passing charts in multiple categories. His consistency was exceptional, posting three 300-yard passing games and equaling the career marks of Gale Gilbert and Aaron Rodgers with 10 career 250-yard passing games.
Fernando finished his Cal career as the all-time leader in completion percentage (66.4%) and brings championship-level experience to Indiana's offense.
Alberto's Rising Potential
Alberto Mendoza, a freshman quarterback, made his collegiate debut in 2024 against Western Illinois, becoming one of 12 true freshmen to see action for the Hoosiers. The younger Mendoza brother brings impressive high school credentials to Bloomington, having guided Christopher Columbus High School to a 26-2 record as a starter and back-to-back Florida Class 4 Metro state titles.
Alberto's prep career included 4,596 passing yards and 57 touchdowns, earning him two-time Class 4 Metro Florida Player of the Year honors and Florida Mr. Football finalist recognition as a junior. His senior season featured 1,950 passing yards and 22 touchdowns on just five interceptions, showcasing his accuracy and decision-making ability.
As a consensus three-star prospect rated among the top-90 quarterbacks nationally, Alberto represents Indiana's future at the position while learning from his experienced brother.
Brotherhood on the Field
The unique dynamic of having both Mendoza brothers in the same quarterback room creates an incredible opportunity for Indiana football. Fernando's experience as a proven starter and Alberto's developmental potential provide the Hoosiers with both immediate impact and long-term stability at the most important position.
Their shared background at Christopher Columbus High School, where both excelled under head coach Dave Dunn, means they understand each other's strengths and can push each other to new levels. This brotherhood extends beyond football, as both are known for their community service work and academic excellence.
Looking Ahead
The Mendoza brothers represent an exciting new chapter for Indiana football. Fernando's proven track record as a 3,000-yard passer combined with Alberto's championship pedigree and high ceiling create a dynamic that could elevate the Hoosiers' program to new heights.
